Earthquake Bird (2019)
Cast: Alicia Vikander, Riley Keough, Naoki Kobayashi, and Jack Huston
Wash Westmoreland’s Earthquake Bird, based on Susanna Jones’s 2001 novel of the same name, is… not for everyone. The film is a slow-burner with an eerie, depressing atmosphere. The performances of Alicia Vikander and Riley Keough are the real draws of the film. Lucy Fly, a young Swedish ex-pat working as a translator in Tokyo in 1989, is played by Alicia Vikander. Lucy is suspected of murdering her friend Lily (Riley Keough) when she goes missing. The majority of the story is told through flashbacks that reveal Lucy’s childhood, her relationship with Japanese photographer Teiji Matsuda (Naoki Kobayashi), and the love triangle that forms when Teiji starts dating Lily. While the story requires some patience on the part of the viewer, it’s an intensely mysterious journey into the life of a troubled woman that’s perfect for rainy evenings.
In for a Murder (2021)
Cast: Anna Smolowik, Pawel Domagala, Szymon Bobrowski, Piotr Adamczyk, Dorota Segda, Rafal Królikowski, Przemyslaw Stippa, Jacek Knap, Olga Sarzynska, and Emma Giegzno
This lighthearted Polish murder mystery film is based on a book written by Katarzyna Gacek and directed by Piotr Mularuk. Magda (Anna Smolowik) is a stay-at-home mother who enjoys reading crime fiction. When Magda discovers a body in a park, she finds herself assisting her bumbling police officer friend Jacek on an investigation that rivals the stories she enjoys. Magda discovers secrets from her white-picket-fence neighbourhood, including links to her own past and a beloved friend who went missing years before. Is In for a Murder a suspenseful thriller like some of the other titles on this list? No, not really, but it’s a very entertaining film with an engaging plot and a truly endearing main character.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Cast: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Rob Schneider, June Squibb, Kenan Thompson, Shaquille O’Neal, Steve Buscemi, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows, Karan Brar, Paris Berelc, Noah Schnapp, China Anne McClain, Michael Chiklis
Not all Halloween films are terrifying and eerie, and not all Salem stories are about witches! Hubie Halloween demonstrates that mysteries can also be amusing. The plot revolves around Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler), an eccentric but straightforward deli worker in Salem, Massachusetts. His jovial, childlike demeanour is frequently mocked by the kids and adults in his neighbourhood. This Halloween, however, Hubie finds himself in the middle of a mystery that he must solve in order to save the community he loves. It’s lighthearted and entertaining, with plenty of LOL moments, and there’s nothing serious about it. After all, it is a mystery-comedy.

I Am all Girls (2021)
Cast: Erica Wessels, Hlubi Mboya, Deon Lotz, Mothusi Magano, Brendon Daniels, Masasa Mbangeni
Is it ever possible for a detective to develop feelings for a criminal? Most people would probably say no. But if it’s for a greater good and to save hundreds of lives, perhaps it’s unavoidable. A special crimes investigator finds common ground with a serial killer in this South African mystery thriller. In the process, she discovers a global child trafficking syndicate. With positive reviews and accolades, this film is well worth seeing.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Cast: Boyd Holbrook, Michael C. Hall, Cleopatra Coleman, Bokeem Woodbine, Rudi Dharmalingam, Rachel Keller
The obsession with solving a mystery, no matter what the cost, can come at a high price. As was the case with officer Thomas “Locke” Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook). The story is set in 1988 and follows a series of mysterious killings in Philadelphia. Officer Lockhart begins tracking the killer, but the murders are unlike anything he has seen or known.
Lockhart’s investigation leads him down a rabbit hole when the killer reappears after nine years. Lockhart’s fixation on finding the killer and serving justice could cost him his job, personal life, and, most likely, his mind. At its core, this murder mystery is a sci-fi thriller with some fascinating moments where the past, present, and future collide.
