An upcoming superhero movie in the United States called Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is based on the DC Comics character Aquaman. The sequel to Aquaman (2018) and the fifteenth installment in the DC Extended Universe are planned for release by Warner Bros. Pictures through a joint production between DC Films, The Safran Company, and Atomic Monster Productions (DCEU).

Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman alongside Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman in the James Wan-directed picture with a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

At the time the first Aquaman movie was being made, Momoa pitched a plot for a follow-up. Wan agreed to supervise development in January 2019 despite not wanting to rush a sequel. A month later, Johnson-McGoldrick agreed to pen the script, and Wan was announced as the film’s director beginning in August 2020.

In June 2021, he revealed the title of the sequel and promised that it would expand on Aquaman’s worldbuilding. Filming took place in the UK, Hawaii, Los Angeles, and New Jersey from the end of the month until the beginning of January 2022.

Aquaman 2 Release date and time

On December 25, 2023, Arthur Curry will return to the big screen in Aquaman 2. The sequel is one of the few films that was unaffected by the global pandemic.

This is largely due to the fact that James Wan had already committed to producing Malignant in 2019, and he wanted to focus on his latest unhinged horror film before returning to the DC Extended Universe. And, in the words of Al Pacino, “what a picture.” Thankfully, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom began filming in June 2021, under the working title ‘Necrus.’

Aquaman 2 Cast

It has been revealed that Jason Momoa will play Arthur Curry/Aquaman once more.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Amber Heard (Mera) are two other confirmed cast members.
Patrick Wilson, who plays Ocean Master/Orm, Dolph Lundgren, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe are all scheduled to return.

Here’s the Aquaman and the Lost cast, based on what we know so far:

  • Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman
  • Amber Heard as Mera
  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta
  • Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna
  • Patrick Wilson as Orm
  • Randall Park as Dr Stephen Shin
  • Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus
  • Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry
  • Indya Moore as Karshon
  • Jani Zhao as Stingray
  • Vincent Regan as Atlan
  • Pilou Asbæk as TBC

After the success of the first movie, it was inevitable that Jason Momoa would return to play Arthur Curry/Aquaman for the fourth time (after Aquaman, Justice League (both versions) and a very brief cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

And despite (seemingly unfounded) rumors that Amber Heard wouldn’t be back as Xebelian princess Mera, the actor used her Instagram(opens in new tab) feed to confirm her return with an image of herself reading a book on set.

Aquaman 2 Plot

Since many people had a hard time taking the character seriously given his personality, Aquaman was for many years one of the most ignored superheroes. Before Jason Mamoa, who made his film debut in Justice League before going on to feature in James Wan’s Aquaman, which is currently one of the ten highest-grossing comic book movies of all time, redesigned the hero for the DCEU, that is.

In his solo debut, Aquaman battled his ruthless brother Orm, the King of Atlantis who wants to rule the surface world. In order for Aquaman to ascend to the throne of Atlantis and protect the surface world from his brother’s fury, the DC movie sent him on a mission to locate the ancient Trident of Atlan.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, a mercenary, joined forces with Orm as he sought retribution against Aquaman for turning down his father’s life. The mercenary was vanquished by Mamoa’s hero while wearing a potent suit constructed of experimental Atlantean technology before being saved by an Atlantis-obsessed scientist.

There is a lot of excitement for the 2023 sequel with Aquaman now ruling Atlantis and Black Manta on the warpath for vengeance, but there is still debate over Mera, Amber Heard’s love interest, returning.

Highlight

The most popular DC film ever is Aquaman, which came out in 2018.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the name of Aquaman 2’s second installment. Naturally, the kingdom of Atlantis, the underwater home of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, is referred to as The Lost Kingdom.

James Wan, who directed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, posted two photographs on Instagram on Thursday, one of which showed him with his laptop during a production meeting and the other of which showed him with the laptop screen reflected onto a TV in the background. The title Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom can be seen in both images in the official logo typeface for the film.

Wan’s attendance at a production meeting for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom supports rumors that the Aquaman sequel will start shooting in the UK in June.

In addition to Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, returning Aquaman stars on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom include Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s half-brother Orm Marius/Ocean Master, and Temuera Morrison as Aquaman’s father Thomas Curry. The sole recent addition is Pilou Asbaek from Game of Thrones.

Aquaman 2 Trailer

Does the trailer for Aquaman 2 exist? I guess, sort of. Fans may get a fair preview of what to expect from The Lost Kingdom in a video that the cast and crew presented at DC FanDome 2021. The main cast is shown filming multiple action scenes, in addition to a tonne of concept art from the movie.

Momoa praised the narrative, noting that “the stakes are bigger” this time and that “serious environmental issues are being tackled.” “The planet is at stake,” says producer Peter Safran. The movie, according to director James Wan, is “more adult” than the first one, but it still seems like a lot of fun given that the concept art in the trailers teases enormous monsters and serpentine aquatic serpents.

The action seems to indicate that Orm and Arthur are working together, or are at the very least fleeing something or someone together. At least Patrick Wilson will be back to portray the bad guy, and it will be intriguing to watch how he changes from the ruthless monster from the previous movie. Black Manta is the next opponent. Wow.

The dome-headed villain’s appearance in the original Aquaman movie straddled a narrow line between a comic-accurate style and a practical, real-world suit; however, the sequel dives straight into his bizarre appearance. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is seen with the recognizable silver helmet with brilliant red eyes in addition to a skin-tight black muscular suit. Long-time Aquaman admirers will undoubtedly be pleased.
