Although Netflix’s adolescent drama 13 Reasons Why has sparked debate since its premiere, fans have continued to watch and root for Hannah, Clay, and their other Liberty High classmates.

The first season followed Clay, an introvert high schooler who gets a box of tape cassettes from his previous crush, Hannah, who died by suicide, and was based on Jay Asher’s book of the same title.

We meet Hannah and are exposed to other high schoolers whom she names and shames for contributing to her profound and ultimately fatal despair through a series of flashbacks.

Following seasons focused more on the growing cast of high school kids, including Hannah’s rapist, Bryce, whose death was the main focus of series three.

The show has previously been chastised for depicting suicide and rape in gory detail onscreen, including a disturbing sequence in which a male character is sodomized with a broom handle.

Season four, which was published on Netflix last week, was not without controversy, with (spoiler alert) the horrific death of a fan favorite by HIV/AIDS causing widespread outrage. Despite Netflix’s promises that the show has officially finished, this hasn’t stopped viewers from speculating about a possible fifth season.

13 Reasons Why Season 5 Release Date: Confirmed Or Canceled?

13 Reasons Why has been canceled, and there will be no fifth season on Netflix.

Regrettably, Netflix has confirmed that 13 Reasons Why will not be returning next year, with the fourth season serving as the final season of Liberty High.

In a statement, the streamer explained that ending the show after series four was strictly a creative decision, as it will “highlight the core cast’s graduation from High School” and thus be “a natural finale to the show.”

Netflix also published a teaser for season four, which shows the actors of 13 Reasons Why finishing their final read-through with passion.

“I will never forget this experience for the rest of my life,” Alisha Boe, who plays Jessica Davis, says emotionally in the video.

Showrunner Brian Yorkey told Entertainment Weekly in May that he decided to finish 13 Reasons Why while filming season two because it “felt like the appropriate stopping point” to end on the kids’ graduation.
