Pam and Tommy, the Hulu limited series, comes to an end on Wednesday, March 9, and with it, the end of Pam and Tommy’s marriage—but why did Pamela and Tommy divorce in real life?
Though the miniseries, which focuses on the high-profile 1990s S*x-tape scandal involving Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, famously did not include input from the subjects themselves—an upcoming Pamela Anderson Netflix documentary will correct that oversight—the final episode of Pam & Tommy offers hints of what really happened in the marriage between the Playboy icon and her Mötley Crüe drummer husband.
In a later shot, a rage-filled Lee is seen yelling at his wife and trashing their living room before finally relenting and signing over the rights to the S*x tape to porn kingpin Seth Warshavsky. “It’s over,” Lily James’ Pamela Anderson says in the sequence, perhaps referring to more than just the controversy. Anderson, who is nine months pregnant, is later seen changing her “Tommy” tattoo to “Mommy.”
But what happened to the ’90s power couple, and why did they divorce? Here’s what we know so far.
Why Did Pam And Tommy Divorce?
Why did Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee separate? Anderson ended the relationship with Lee on February 28, 1995, just a few days after he was arrested and accused of spousal and child abuse. The couple had been married for three years at the time. According to Anderson’s divorce petitions, which were filed in Superior Court in downtown Los Angeles, they were based on “irreconcilable differences,” and she wanted full custody of her and Lee’s sons: Brandon, who was 20 months at the time, and Dylan Jagger, who was 2 months at the time. The court ordered Anderson, who had changed her last name to “Lee” after her marriage to Lee in 1995, to restore her legal name, Pamela Denise Anderson, to the public records.
Anderson called the police on February 24, 1995, to report that Lee had kicked her in the back and buttocks three times while she was cradling her son Dylan, who was seven weeks old at the time. Lee was arrested the next day. On the same day that he was arrested, an incident occurred. Her finger was fractured, and red stains were seen on her back, according to the police report.
Felony charges of domestic violence, child abuse, and unauthorized possession of a firearm were brought against Lee. Lee was released from custody three days after posting a $500,000 bond. In addition, he was instructed not to communicate with Anderson or his children and to remain at least 100 yards away from their home in the meantime.
A little more than two months after his arrest, Lee pled no contest to felony spousal abuse in Malibu Municipal Court on April 8, 1998, and was sentenced to a minimum of 6 months in County Jail and a maximum of one year. According to the Los Angeles Times, his accusations of child abuse and unlawful possession of a firearm were dropped in return for his plea of no contest to spousal abuse, which has the same effect as pleading guilty.
Also imposed by Judge Lawrence J. Mira was a probationary period of three years during which Lee was permitted weekly supervised visits with his son, as well as an order requiring him to attend anger management counseling and refrain from contacting Anderson, perform 200 hours of community service, donate money to anti-domestic violence resources, and submit to random drug and alcohol tests, which he was not allowed to use.
The day following the sentencing, Anderson told reporters, “I’m anxious for [Tommy Lee] to see his children, as I’m sure his children are anxious to see dad.” Outside the courthouse, Ms. Anderson expressed her pride in Tommy, saying, “I’m really proud of Tommy.” That he accepted responsibility for what happened makes me happy.’ The first step, I believe, is toward healing.′′
After Anderson’s release from prison, the two reconciled before their second divorce in 2001. Anderson, Dylan, and Jagger reconnected with Lee in 2008 after relocating to his home with Lee. As Lee explained to Rolling Stone at the time, they had only tried it 800 times — “801, here we go.” I’ve decided to take Pamela and the kids into my home. Everything about it is amazing. The strategy appears to be effective.” People magazine said at the time that Anderson and Lee were “two people who have been through a lot and who know each other pretty well.” In 2010, the couple decided to call it quits.
At the time, Lee was 20 years old and had accused his and Anderson’s son, Brandon, of sexually assaulting him. When Lee posted a selfie of himself with his mouth swollen and bloodied, he wrote it, “My heart is torn.” The photo has now been deleted. “You can provide your children with everything they could possibly desire throughout their entire lives and they will still turn against you.” Brandon, you did an excellent job. Son, you’re a rock star! According to reports at the time, Brandon acted in self-defense, a claim that Lee categorically disputed. Then he tweeted, “Hey @Tmz, maybe get your facts straight before you go reporting garbage.” “As my fiancé and I were lying in bed, my son barged into the room and assaulted me. When I begged him to leave the house, he responded by knocking me out cold then knocking me out cold again. He attempted to flee from the police. He was apprehended and charged with attempted murder. ‘It’s the truth,’ says the speaker.
It was previously reported by Us Weekly that the altercation between Brandon and Lee began over statements Anderson made regarding Lee’s 1998 arrest during an interview with Piers Moran at the time. In accordance with the insider, Lee was “enraged” by the interview and became physically combative with Brandon after the latter spoke up for his mother. ‘Tommy was enraged by comments Pam made to Piers regarding his and Pam’s relationship,’ according to a source. After defending Pam, Brandon did what any devoted son would do and that’s when all hell broke loose,” says the author. “The entire episode is a microcosm of far larger issues within the family,” the insider went on to explain. The scenario is quite terrible because Brandon adores his father.”
Immediately following the incident, Anderson published a blog entry on the Pamela Anderson Foundation’s website, titled “Alcoholism is the Devil,” in which she referred to Lee as the “ultimate definition of a narcissist/sociopath.” In the meantime, I shall not communicate with Tommy until he is sober and in his right mind. ” In spite of the fact that he has attempted to contact me,” Anderson stated. He has been denied access to the website. ” Trying to argue with a lunatic will fail every time. The truth will be revealed, I’m confident of it. It is with great relief that I stand by my son, who acted in self-defense and was terrified for his life.”
“No one realizes the decades of disappointment that this man has caused our family,” she concluded. The epicenter of sorrow, drama, and consternation on a consistent basis. Right from the beginning, he was envious of his boys’ ability and beauty. The man is suffering from a medical condition.
