History of Miss Hawaii USA
The most recent state to compete in Miss USA was Hawaii, which did so for the first time in 1962. It sent representatives to Miss Universe before receiving full statehood admission in 1959. The first Miss Hawaii USA, Macel Wilson, won Miss USA despite the late start, making it one of the most successful.
Hawaii, one of the four states with four winners (second only to Texas and California), produced four Miss USA winners. Hawaii has produced a lot of Miss USA winners and semifinalists, but not many runners-up. Previous Miss Teen USA contestants include two. Kelly Hu, Miss Teen USA 1985, made history in 1993 when she became the first Miss Teen USA winner.
A large number of Miss Hawaii USA champions participated in competitions abroad. There was a Miss Hawaii USA who competed at Miss World, similar to Miss South Carolina USA. One more participated in the Miss International pageant.
After winning Miss USA, four of the winners competed at Miss Universe. As one of only eight Miss USA winners to go on to become Miss Universe in the history of the pageant, Miss Hawaii USA 1997, Brook Lee, won the title of Miss USA 1997 and the crown of Miss Universe 1997, representing the United States or Hawaii at significant international pageants.
