Rafael Nadal finally announced on Friday that he and his wife Mery “Xisca” Perelló are anticipating their first child together after speculations persisted all week that he and his wife were expecting.

“If everything goes well, I’ll be a parent,” Nadal stated, according to Sky Sports.

The couple, who married in 2019, made the decision to keep their happy news a secret for the time being. However, the news was first reported by the Spanish daily Hola! at the start of the week. Nadal’s justification for holding the news a secret at first was that, like many other athletes, he prefers to keep his personal life private.

“In my professional life, I’m already exposed enough,” Nadal stated. “My family and I prefer to keep a low profile.”

The Spaniard is now in the midst of a historic season in 2022. He’s already won the first two slams of the year, the Australian Open and the French Open, and he’s set to compete at Wimbledon in a few weeks. This gives him a chance to become only the 6th tennis player in history to win all four Grand Slams in a calendar year.

Furthermore, with 22 Grand Slam victories, the world No. 4 now owns the record for most Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis history. He has two titles more than Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Will his new role as a father keep him off the court at all?

“I don’t know how it will alter my life because I have no experience (as a father),” Nadal added, “but I don’t expect it to change my professional career.”

Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 27, is likely to feature the 36-year-old. He still has left foot pain, but he hopes to play for as long as his body will allow him to.
