To support his young LGBT+ fans, Grey’s Anatomy actor Jake Borelli, who portrays Levi Schmitt, came out as gay.
After his character Schmitt kissed male surgeon Nico Kim (Alex Landi) in the Grey’s Anatomy episode “Flowers Grow Out of My Grave,” Borelli came out as homosexual in public.
The sixteenth season of Grey’s Anatomy features an on-screen romance between Schmitt, played by Borelli, and Kim.
Whether he believed viewers needed to know if an actor playing a gay character is gay in real life was a question that Borelli was asked in an interview with Parade published on Thursday (January 24, 2019).
Grey’s Anatomy actor Jake Borelli: “I felt “compelled” to be open and honest about my sexuality.”
“I understand where you’re coming from when you say you don’t think it’s necessarily mandatory for actors to talk about their sexuality,” responded Borelli.
“I think it’s a case-by-case basis, but for me, and with the relationship that I started to have with these young LGBTQ viewers, I felt compelled and an obligation to be honest with them, and to say, ‘Hey, guys. You’re not alone.’
“Otherwise, I think it would do it a disservice.”
“It has become bigger than me, and it’s become bigger than just my sexuality. That’s why I did it.”
The 27-year-old actor’s remarks come when people debate whether homosexual actors should only play gay roles.
Actor Darren Criss announced in December that he would stop playing homosexual characters in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace so that gay actors could take their place.

According to Gay Times, Jake Borelli could speak out about his sexuality by capitalizing on a Grey’s Anatomy scene. In a 2018 broadcast of the program, Levi kissed Dr. Nico Kim. (Alex Landi). After watching them flirt for weeks before the romantic occasion, the kiss was unavoidable. It was a gradual burn, but it paid off!
Jake posted the following on Instagram at the time:
As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me. This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I’m able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy.
He continued,
“His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you. To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do too, that you are seen, and that we’re all in this together. And to everyone who has supported me over the years, I can’t thank you enough, and I love you more than all the stars…”
So, does Jake have a romantic partner?
His Instagram profile shows that he’s dating Chase Williamson right now. Chase describes himself as a skilled photographer in his IG bio. The first photo of the two on Jake’s page appears to be from March 2022, when they went to the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 30th Annual Academy Awards Viewing Party. It’s unclear when the two started dating.
On their various Instagram accounts, the two have posted some pretty pictures of themselves together, including Jake’s touching birthday tribute to Chase.
