Gibbs was the Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing. He also played linebacker for Stanford University, raced in Nascar for four seasons from 2000 to 2003, and worked as an offensive quality control assistant for his father’s Washington Commanders Organization for a number of years.
At first, Gibbs played linebacker for Stanford University from 1991 to 1994, just like his famous father. Gibbs led the Cardinal in tackles during his senior year, but he later decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and drive in Nascar races.
How Did Coy Gibbs Die?
Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) announced on social media on November 6, 2022, that co-owner Coy Gibbs had died suddenly. The cause of death hasn’t been made public, but the organisation that runs stock car races said Coy died in his sleep.
He passed away just hours after his 20-year-old son, Ty Gibbs, won the 2022 Nascar Xfinity Series Championship Race.
In a press conference after the race, Coy talked about how proud he was of his son’s win. He said (according to Nascar), “I think he’s smart and willing to work hard.” I was very happy about it. I think it made my wife happy, and it made us both happy that he just hammered down and did his job. “He will learn how to do that if he wants to do it for a living.”
It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night. The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time.
