Emilia Clarke has made it through tough times. The actress is reflecting back at the scary medical problems she suffered while filming Game of Thrones.

While promoting her upcoming West End debut in a production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, the actress recently spoke out to BBC Sunday Morning about her experience battling with two brain aneurysms, the first in 2011 and the second in 2013.

After describing the suffering as “unimaginable,” Clarke said, “it was really beneficial to have Game of Thrones sweep me up and give me that purpose.”

Clarke’s brain aneurysms need lengthy recoveries both times they occurred. The actress says she is now simply grateful to be alive after suffering so much brain damage.

Clarke remarked, “It’s incredible that I am able to communicate and live my life fully regularly with absolutely no repercussions, given the amount of my brain that is no longer usable.”

Clarke remarked that she is “in the really, really, really small percentage of people who can survive that,” but added that there is “quite a bit missing” in her brain.

When a portion of your brain does not receive blood for even a second, it dies. So the blood just goes around the problem another way, but by that time the problem is gone,” she said.
