David Harbour’s body has changed in a great way over the past few years. Here, we explain everything you need to learn about his health journey, from how he lost weight to how his wife Lilly Allen reacted.
David Harbour’s health has gone through a lot over the years. The actor from Stranger Things, who was once praised for his “Dad Bod,” has also put on and lost a lot of weight for roles.
Below, we talk about how the actor for Hellboy changed his body, from trying out for The Blob with, well, a bit of a paunch to losing weight and getting in shape to help his acting career.
Who Is David Harbour?
From the Netflix show Stranger Things, everyone knows about the brave police officer Jim Hopper. David Harbour is an American actor who plays Jim Hopper. David Kenneth Harbour is his full name, and he was born in New York on April 10, 1975. David has worked on many projects that are fun to watch. In movies like “Brokeback Mountain,” “Quantum of Solace,” “The Green Hornet,” “End of Watch,” “The Equalizer,” and “Black Mass,” he played supporting roles.
He was the main character in films like Hellboy and Black Widow, which were made by Marvel. David has been a part of a long list of TV shows as an actor over the course of his career. But he became well-known when he played Jim Hopper in the Netflix show Stranger Things. David Harbour asked for a Critics’ Preference Television Award for his role in Stranger Things. He was also shortlisted for 2 Emmy Awards and 1 Golden Globe Award.
In his personal life, David Harbour has been married to his longtime girlfriend, the singer Lilly Allen, since September 2020. Even though the show Stranger Things made Harbour famous, he doesn’t believe in ghosts or other supernatural things. David thinks that consciousness is what makes life happen.
In an interview with The Guardian, David said that his bad habits caused him a lot of trouble when he was in his early 20s. He drank too much. His addiction was so bad that he thought about killing himself at one point. But then he got a kitten and worrying about who would take care of it stopped him from thinking badly. David Harbour was able to get sober, but life was not kind to him. He was later told he had bipolar disorder. Treatments helped his condition get better over time.
After that, he put everything he had into acting. Slowly, he grew to love theatre. But it wasn’t easy for him to become an actor. In the beginning, it was hard for him to make enough money from acting to pay his bills every month. On the call sheet, he was either fifth or sixth. But over time, he found his way, and Stranger Things changed his life.
David Harbour’s weight loss
Harbour told the New York Times (via Hollywood Life) in 2021 that she gained weight for Black Widow and then lost weight for the early scenes in the Marvel film. The actor said that he had to lose 60 pounds for the 2021 movie. He told them:
“I said to the first A.D. [assistant director], ‘Listen, we have to shoot the flashback stuff at the end, so that by the time we shoot the flashback, I’ll lose the weight and I’ll be thin.’ And he was like, ‘You’ll never be thin.’” I was like, ‘Yes I will, man.’ And I lost like 60 lbs. through the shooting. The first stuff we shot was at the prison, so that belly that’s coming at you, that’s all real belly. And then as we shot, I started to lose weight. I was just hungry a lot of the shoot.”
Page Six says that Harbour lost weight in part because of his character in the fourth season of Stranger Things. We all know that his character Hopper spends most of the season in a Russian prison, where he doesn’t get the best food and has to do a lot of hard work.
I think most of David Harbour’s fans would agree that he looks good no matter what size he is.

His Wife’s Reaction To His Weight Loss
In June 2021, David talked to the New York Times about how he actually obtained and lost a lot of weight for his role in Black Widow. “I was like, ‘Let’s use the weight.’ So I started eating even more. I got up to 280 lbs., and I loved it,” he said.
Around that time, he did meet Lilly Allen, a British singer who would later become his wife, and she actually liked his physique. “It’s a true sign of my undeniable charm that my wife met me when I weighed 280 pounds and had this beard and hair,” he joked.“We went on a date at the Wolseley [restaurant] in London, and she really fell for me at my worst, physically and hair-wise.”
David’s Russian military character, Alexei Shostakov, had to be shown in early scenes as a younger man for the Marvel movie. This meant that the actor had to lose weight.
“I told the first A.D. [assistant director], ‘Listen, we have to shoot the flashbacks at the end, so that by the time we shoot the flashbacks, I’ll have lost weight and be thin.'” And he said, “You’ll never be thin,” the actor said with a laugh. “I was like, ‘Yes I will, man.’ And I lost about 60 pounds while the movie was being made. The first things we shot were at the prison, so that belly you’re seeing is all real. Then, as we were filming, I began to lose weight. I just had to eat a lot during the shoot.”
After her husband lost 60 pounds, Lilly had “mixed feelings” about how he looked.
“She has some mixed emotions about it, to be honest. He said, “That’s a good place to be in a relationship.” “It’s much better to start a relationship from that point than to be the young, good-looking buck and watch yourself get worse over time.”
Lilly always seems to say nice things about her husband, no matter how big or small he is. In 2019, after being named one of PEOPLE’s “Men of the Year,” he told the magazine that the “Smile” singer had told him he was “so gorgeous it was an outrage.”
