Badell was born on November 3, 1972 in Venezuela. He moved to Puerto Rico in his early twenties. He began lifting weights at the age of fifteen, which marked the start of his professional bodybuilding career.
He entered his first bodybuilding competition at the age of 19 and won the Junior Caribbean Bodybuilding Championships due to his rapid muscle growth. Gustavo was able to achieve professional status after nearly six years of training and winning the Caribbean Championships in 1997.
