Charles Kimbrough:  On May 23, 1936, Charles Mayberry Kimbrough was born. He was an American actor best known for playing Jim Dial, the straight-faced news anchor on Murphy Brown. In 1990, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” for his role.

From 1988 to 1998, the CBS sitcom followed the misadventures of Murphy Brown, who was played by Candice Bergen and was a well-known TV reporter. Kimbrough played Bergen’s stuffy coworker, an anchor who often talked about how great journalism used to be. Grant Shaud, Robert Pastorelli, and Faith Ford were also on the show.

Even though his role in Murphy Brown made him famous, Kimbrough also worked on important theatre shows like Candide and Sylvia during his career. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his part in the first Broadway production of Steven Sondheim’s Company in 1970.

Kimbrough is also known for doing the voice of Victor the living gargoyle in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002). During his career, the actor lent his voice to several TV shows. He was in Family Guy, Recess, Mighty Max, and Batman Beyond episodes.

Charles Kimbrough died on January 11 in Culver City, California. He was nominated for a Tony and an Emmy and played a straight-laced news anchor opposite Candice Bergen on “Murphy Brown.” He was 86.

His son, John Kimbrough, told the New York Times on Sunday that it was true.

The actor died of natural causes in a hospital, the agency said.
