The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team went against Rockhurst Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Mark Twain Building. The men’s season record was 15-4 before the game and their Great Lakes Valley Conference record was 6-3. The Tritons are ranked 2nd according to GLVC’s 2018-19 official men’s basketball standings through January 26, 2019.
#42 Eric Dust, senior, marketing, scored the first two points for the Tritons 20 seconds after the game started. #12 Anthony Hughes, sophomore, computer science, strongly followed up with a 3-pointer. The Tritons were ready to add another game to their winning streak. Next, #11 Ronnie Carson, junior, sports marketing and special education, and #1 Jason Towery, junior, communications, both made 2-pointers.
#23 Steve Webb, freshman, software engineering, scored nine points under the last six minutes in the first half. Dust was able to score eight points by making four 2-pointers. #10 Johnathan Matthews, senior, communications, shot a 2-pointer along with a great 3-pointer in the first half. The Tritons led the game 32-19 by halftime.
After constant sub-ins and -outs, Towery and Webb were able to make good free throws to add onto the Tritons overall score. Without delay, the Tritons scored eight points in two minutes. Then, seven points in less than a minute. Towery scored nine points in the last part of the game along with Webb and Hughes 2-pointers and free throws lead the Tritons into their win against Rockhurst.
The final score was Tritons 75 and Rockhurst 59. The Triton’s top five shooters were Matthews with 17 points, Towery had 16, Webb 14. Hughes and Dust were tied for 12 points. During the game, Webb collected his first double-double with his 14 points and his career best of 11 rebounds. The Tritons had 38 points in the paint with a minimum of nine turnovers. In the second half of the game, the men’s basketball had a 100 percent 3-pointer shooting average which mean the men made all three of their 3-pointers. The Tritons continue their winning streak adding on their fourth game.
The men’s basketball team will have their next two games this week. Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. their opponent is Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo., and Saturday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. at Drury in Springfield, Mo.
