Sunday, Feb. 3, Super Bowl 53 took place. The Los Angeles Rams (13-3) and the New England Patriots (11-5) faced off at 5:30 p.m. with the Vince Lombardi Trophy on the line.
The Patriots have won five Super Bowls, and the most recent one was Super Bowl 51 in 2017. The Rams have been to the Super Bowl once in 2000 where they won against the Tennessee Titans. The last time the Rams and Patriots played each other it was the 2002 Super Bowl where the Patriots won 20-17.
Atlanta born rhythm and blues legend, Gladys Knight sang the national anthem before the game started.
The Super Bowl 53’s first quarter ended with zero points being scored. There were three punts from the Los Angeles Rams and one missed field goal from New England’s Stephen Gostkowski from the 46-yard line.
The second quarter began the actual game with a kick from Patriots Gostkowski for another field goal worth three points. The score was 3 Patriots 0 Rams. Rams had two punts at the beginning of the quarter and the Patriots had a punt. Tom Brady’s pass was incomplete short left to Patriots Rob Gronkowski. As a result, Rams Cory Littleton intercepted the play meaning it was a turnover on downs. The Rams had one more punt before finishing off the first half of the game.
The halftime score was Patriots 3 Rams 0. Maroon 5 along with Travis Scott and Big Boi performed during the Pepsi Super Bowl 53 halftime show. Maroon 5 performed their greatest hits from “Moves Like Jagger” and “Sugar” to “Girls Like You ft. Cardi B,” while Travis Scott and Big Boi blazed the stage with their hits.
In the third quarter, Rams Johnny Hekker had a 65-yard punt making that his eighth punt. Punts were one of the biggest plays so far for both teams. After a sack, the Rams were able to push back the Patriots 35 yards and Greg Zuerlein made a 53-yard field goal. Zuerlin tied the game at 3-3 with two minutes left in the third quarter. The 53-yard field goal was the second-longest in Super Bowl history.
In the last minutes of Super Bowl 53, Patriots tight end Gronkowski caught a 29-yard pass from Brady, which resulted in Sony Michel’s 2-yard touchdown run. Patriots had a 10-3 lead. Gostkowski delivered the final play with a 41-yard field goal with seconds left. The Patriots won the Super Bowl 53, 13-3. The L.A. Rams fell short in Atlanta.
The main question was: Will Rams’ Jared Goff finish with more yards than New England Tom Brady? Well, Goff was 19/38 passing for 229 yards and Brady completed 21/35 passes for 262 yards.
