Jason Brown, football coach and star of the Netflix documentary series “Last Chance U,” may have used up his last chance at collegiate coaching. Last week, Starting Five Sports Network and other various national news outlets started to share a screen shot of text messages between Independence Community College (ICC) head football coach Brown and German-born ICC student-athlete Alexandros Alexiou. After allegedly facing disciplinary actions, Brown texted Alexiou, “I’m your new Hitler.” After public scrutiny became too great, Brown resigned from his position as head coach, posting his resignation letter on Twitter late Sunday, Feb. 24. Brown thanked his staff, players and fans, but didn’t directly address the controversy.
“Last Chance U” is a Netflix Original that documents the tumultuous culture that surrounds junior college football. Junior College is viewed as the last chance for these young student-athletes to pursue NCAA athletics. Most of the students featured in the show have the pure athletic ability to be playing Division I football, but other circumstances have caused them to go the junior college route. Some go on to have great success. Dakota Allen finished his junior college career and attended Texas Tech, and now has his sights set on the NFL Draft. But for every feel-good story on the show, there is a heartbreaking tale, as is the case with Isaiah Wright. Wright went on to play Division II football for a season but plead guilty to murder in August 2018.
As Five Sports Network and other outlets began sharing the screenshots of the text messages, people began to talk. As the talking got louder, Brown began to fight back against negative comments. Brown seemed to be lashing out at anyone he could. According to the ICC football website, Jake Bugg was an assistant defensive line coach. Having resigned from his position in January, Bugg tweeted his support for Alexiou. Brown launched a full-on social media assault on Bugg. Brown attempted to discredit Buggs character by claiming Bugg was never on the team’s staff. Brown claimed Bugg was only an equipment manager, even as his own team’s website refuted Browns claim.
President Dr. Daniel Barwick released the following statement regarding the Brown situation: “Independence Community College does not condone the language Coach Brown used in his message. I have spoken with Coach Brown about his message to the student, and he fully understands that his language was not appropriate. The college is investigating the matter and will have no further statement at this time.”
