FIFA World Cup at UMSL

The University of Missouri St. Louis’ Millennium Student Center was packed with eager sports fans on Wednesday afternoon as they gathered to watch the second game of the semifinals for the World Cup in South Africa, with Germany vs. Spain.

Fans from all over the St. Louis area came to enjoy the game in the comfort of the Millennium Student Center. Whether they were students who stopped by between their classes, teachers taking their lunch, or just avid Soccer fans from the community, they all had one thing on their mind and that was the game. UM-St. Louis’ Millennium Student Center offers one of the best venues for a viewing party with large comfortable chairs, spacious open areas for the crowds to come in droves, and the most important part of any sports party, the big screen television, which the MSC has two.

Ready for the match to begin Dave, a teacher from the St. Louis area, sits enthusiastically in his teams trademark green jersey hoping that Germany can once again deliver a win for their fans. Dave, who has watched several World Cup games at UMSL, returned Wednesday for the relaxing cool environment on a hot day. The unique and diverse atmosphere, and the great energy of the other spectators who brought a grand sense of comradery, regardless of their team affiliation.

One of Dave’s as well as the majority of the group’s favorite aspect of the MSC was The Nosh. Which is a quick service restaurant that offers every sports lovers favorite game foods, including the essentials to any game day celebration with  pizza, chips, burgers and wings to name a few. Dave could only make one suggestion, remarking jokingly, “We could use some beer.”

Along with comfort, foodand the energy of the fans, the MSC also boasts a very practical amenity for game day. With free high speed wireless internet allowing fans to work on homework, check their emails and look up stats on their favorite players and other game details right from their seats. Another spectator, Tyler Bedell, also sat down to enjoy the game coming from a Bible discussion group, with his hopes on Spain to get the win.  Bedell, who hadn’t planned on watching the game, thought the MSC was a great place to enjoy the festivities with a few friend.

“I don’t watch TV often, but the MSC provides a great place to go with a good group of people,” Bedell said. UMSL and the Millennium Student Center offered the perfect location for these sports fans to all come together, relax, have some food and just enjoy the game. As the teams’ national anthems began to play, you could feel the anticipation and excitement surge through the room, as everyone prepared to support their team and bring home the win.

Final score: Spain 1, Germany 0.
