Former personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, Michael Cohen, testified in front of the House Oversight Committee Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019. Michael Cohen, who has been President Trump’s personal lawyer for the past 10 years, aired out his grievances against President Trump in his personal statement for the public hearing of the 2016 election investigation. Cohen, who is facing time in Federal prison for lying to Congress, sat before the House Oversight Committee and expressed his new demise for Trump. The controversy from Cohen’s testimony hardly comes from the evidence provided, but rather from his reputation as being a liar and a ‘fixer’ to the president. Many people are having a hard time trusting the credibility and reliability of what Cohen provided.

The overall message Cohen wanted to provide was an honest and open analysis of who the man Donald Trump really is. There were ample examples that only reiterated what Democrats have been trying to say, “Donald Trump is a racist, a conman, and a cheat” as Cohen said.

During Cohen’s opening statement, he asked the committee that his family be protected from presidential threats and questions regarding the ongoing investigation. What Cohen truly wanted to do was fix what he had done by previously lying to Congress, and give the American people the truth about who Trump really is. On multiple accounts, Cohen illustrated many ways in which he believes Trump is a racist. He provided evidence to back up shady actions Trump has taken in covering up his mistakes, including having Cohen pay for the silence of an affair he had with an adult film star, and then paying Cohen back for the hush money while in the Oval Office.

A big takeaway from Cohen’s testimony was how Cohen was trying to encapsulate President Trump’s mob-like tactics. Cohen said Trump was an enigma and that his loyalty to Trump monopolized his life.  As Trump’s personal fixer for the past 10 years, Cohen gave the Republicans a chilling statement. Cohen said, “I’m responsible for your silliness because I did the same thing that you’re doing now for 10 years. I protected Mr. Trump for 10 years. I can only warn people. The more people that follow Mr. Trump as I did blindly are going to suffer the same consequences that I’m suffering.”

I think it’s important to take into consideration everything Cohen shared with the House Oversight Committee. Although many question Cohen’s credibility as someone who has so easily lied for Trump over the past 10 years and to Congress, a lot of what Cohen said only strengthens arguments and investigations against President Trump.  It is also essential to point out that Cohen doesn’t want a presidential pardon. This man is going to federal prison and at this point has nothing to lose. Not to mention Cohen and his family has been publicly harassed by President Trump for the past two years. In my opinion, I think Cohen airing out all his dirt on Trump is an effort to help redeem himself.

Overall, everyone is going to continue speculating over this testimony. Republicans are going to be angry and call it a Democrat smear to ruin Trump’s re-election. Democrats will call it the truth and call for President Trump’s resignation or further investigations. However, the only thing the people can do to make their voices heard is to vote in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.
