Karen Yarbrough, a progressive Maywood Democrat who held public office for almost twenty years, has passed away. She was the clerk for Cook County. She was seventy-three years old.

Henderson Yarbrough, the former mayor of Maywood, and her family were there when Ms. Yarbrough died away on Sunday afternoon, according to Sally Daly, the deputy clerk of communications for the county clerk’s office.

Chief Deputy Clerk Cedric Giles released a statement saying, “We have lost one of the brightest lights in the public service arena in Cook County and the State of Illinois and we will never be quite the same.”

Daly last week described Ms. Yarbrough’s medical situation as critical without providing specifics. She had been hospitalized and was receiving treatment for it.

Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., who was close to Ms. Yarbrough, said he would remember her as a superb leader who skillfully oversaw the nation’s second-largest county.

Davis said, “The county clerk is a big job. It plays a central role in county governance and county services that people need. We applaud and commend her for her outstanding service. She was a real asset to the Democratic Party of Cook County and played a key role in it. We are going to miss her. We already miss her.”

As the first woman and Black person to hold the position of Cook County clerk, Ms. Yarbrough made history. She held elected office for over twenty years, holding positions as a state legislator and the Cook County recorder of deeds.

She worked for the Democratic Party of Illinois as well as the Cook County Democratic Party, demonstrating her involvement in Democratic Party politics. She was treasurer of the Cook County party and a Democratic committeeperson for west suburban Proviso Township. She is a part of the Illinois Party’s state central committee.

After being sworn in as a state representative in 2001, Ms. Yarbrough went on to win elections for Cook County clerk in 2018 and recorder of deeds in 2012. In 2020, she took on all the responsibilities of the recorder’s office as county clerk after it was abolished.

On August 22, 1950, Ms. Yarbrough was born. She graduated with a master’s in inner city studies from Northeastern Illinois University and an undergraduate degree in business management from Chicago State University.

She was more than just a lawmaker. Ms. Yarbrough founded the Hathaway Insurance Agency and held a real estate broker license.
