On Sept. 28 St. Charles Community College will be hosting an event called the “Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.” Community members will gather and create their walking team and can also collect donations for the research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The Alzheimer’s Association is an extremely large non-profit voluntary health organization that is dedicated and committed to expediting the progress of developing a prevention and possibly even a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. In collaboration with St. Charles Community College as well as 599 other communities and associations, the goal is to bring communities together to raise awareness. Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m., the ceremony will be at 9:30, and the walk will start at 10 a.m. The route is two miles long.
Currently more than 5 million Americans are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million individuals by the year 2050. Between the year 2000 and 2017 the increase in fatality from this disease has increased by 145 percent. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimers are women. One in three seniors dies from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. This disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. In the U.S., someone develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds.
The walk is held annually as 600 communities gather to walk in awareness of those suffering. This inspiring event has no age limit and no ability restrictions as it is one of the largest events to raise awareness to this disease.
Participating in the walk fuels the mission and each individual participant is helping change the level of awareness in the community. While there is no fee to register for the event the association encourages those participants who have signed up to reach out to receive donations with easy-to-use tools through social media.
There are prizes and incentives that come with fundraising. If you earn $500 or more you will join the elite ranks of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Champions Club. Those who earn $1,000 or more will join the Grand Champions Club. Those who earn $2,500 will join the Elite Grand Champions Club.
Members of the rank Champions Club will receive a t-shirt, commemorative medal, a fundraising badge and a thank-you certificate. To become a member, your fundraising must be credited to your own personal fundraising goal.
There is also the option to join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Planning Committee which helps grow the movement to end the disease from the ground up. Committee members plan each walk event from beginning to end. If you are interested in joining, you can search for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s nearest to you at act.alz.org and click the “Volunteer” button on the walk’s page.
If you or a loved one are suffering from this disease you can sign up to walk to raise awareness as this is a great cause and a growing disease. While some individuals may not have the time to walk to raise awareness any size donation could help millions of people who suffer everyday. For more information visit act.alz.org.
