On the Sunday morning of June 12 a shooting occurred at the nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida. Fourty-nine people were killed and 53 were wounded in the nightclub. Not everyone who was in Pulse that night has been identified. The shooter was identified as Omar Mir Seddique Mateen.
President Barack Obama ordered the flags to be at half-mast June 12. His official order said, ” I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, June 16, 2016. ”
A campus-wide email was sent out June 14 from the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Chancellor Thomas George. The email said, “As a memorial to the lives lost in the Orlando, Florida, tragedy, the flags on the UMSL campus will be flown at half-mast until sunset on Thursday, June 16th. It should serve as a reminder to us all that we remain one nation united in opposition to hate and bigotry. In our unity we demonstrate our support and acceptance for each and every individual and pledge ourselves to working toward a more fair and just community.”
