If you’ve noticed stores becoming more aggressively pink and the air smelling a lot like chocolate, it’s because it’s almost Valentine’s Day. However, it’s not just the couples that are getting all the attention. For those who are happily single, here is how to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Many single people can celebrate Singles Awareness Day (or the ironic acronym S.A.D.) Feb. 15. According to Singles Awareness, the goal of S.A.D is to “let singles have celebrations, get-togethers, etc. and to exchange gifts with their single friends. The awareness day was established by single people who were just sick of feeling left out on Valentine’s Day.” Every year, this unofficial holiday has been gaining support, so much so that companies are capitalizing on it.
The company Sour Patch Kids has launched an exclusive Amazon store to celebrate Singles Awareness Appreciation Day. According to VegNews, the Amazon store offers a variety of sweet and vegan friendly candies, as well as items such as “warm blankets for snuggling solo, and tote bags with tongue-in-cheek sayings such as “no baggage.” A Sour Patch Kids media representative told VegNews, “Like single people thinking Valentine’s Day is sour, we wanted to turn the time into a sweet experience as well.”
Hooters is also participating this year by inviting singles to shred ‘em and forget ‘em on. Hooters says participants are asked to bring “a photo of your ex to your favorite local Hooters location on Valentine’s Day, where Hooters Girls will help you shred the evidence.” This act will earn guests 10 free boneless wings with the purchase of any 10 wings. This is the third year Hooters is giving patrons the opportunity to #ShredYourEx. Over the past two years, 54,000 participants have participated in Hooters online version of #ShredYourEx. In 2017 alone, more than 18,000 turned their heartbreak into a delicious meal.
Not in the mood for chicken wings? Here are a few alternatives to consider:
- Go to T.G.I. Friday’s anytime from Feb. 9-14 and treat you and your friends to a nice half-priced bottle of wine.
- Download Auntie Anne’s My Pretzel Perks app to get a buy one, get one free heart-shaped pretzel.
- At Firehouse Subs, you can get a free dessert with any purchase on Valentine’s Day.
- Order Jack in the Box via the app to score a free dessert on Valentine’s Day—desserts range from a five-piece churro, cheesecake or regular shake.
Even though it seems like it, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. Similar to Singles Awareness Day, Galentine’s Day is a holiday Amy Poehler’s Parks and Recreation character Leslie Knope introduced in an episode back in 2010. Leslie explains on the show that Galentine’s Day is “only the best day of the year. Every Feb. 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it.” It’s like Valentine’s Day, only instead of celebrating your significant other, you spend it with your friends. So, whoever you decide to celebrate with and however you decide to celebrate, just remember to buy yourself some candy this week and appreciate yourself.
