A tragic incident unfolded in Chicago where an 11-year-old boy lost his life while trying to shield his pregnant mother from harm.

It happened when a convicted felon, Crosetti Brand, reportedly attacked them with a knife just a day after being released on parole. According to authorities, the woman was preparing her children for school when Brand, whom she had known from years earlier, forcefully entered their home.

Amid the assault, the brave young boy named Jayden Perkins courageously tried to defend his mother. Both Jayden and his mother were rushed to the hospital, where Jayden tragically succumbed to his injuries. According to CBS Chicago, his mother, who is eight months pregnant, and her unborn child are both expected to recover.

During a press conference, Cook County Attorney Kim Foxx highlighted Jayden’s heroic act, while Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed frustration over Brand’s release on parole despite repeated probation violations.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the need for effective measures to protect vulnerable individuals from repeat offenders.

Let me start by saying this is something that should have never happened,” Snelling said.

Brand had been serving a 16-year sentence for charges related to home invasion and aggravated assault at the Stateville Correctional Center. However, he was released on parole on Tuesday.

Tragically, the very next day, he entered the home of a family and committed a heinous act, resulting in the death of an innocent 11-year-old boy. Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti outlined the charges against Brand, which include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, home invasion with a dangerous weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and prior violation of an order of protection.

Chief Ursitti also revealed that Brand has a history of domestic abuse and had been in a prior relationship with the victim over 15 years ago. Despite the victim filing orders of protection against him, Brand was released on parole in October, with an electronic monitor.

However, he allegedly violated parole by threatening the victim via text and showing up at her home, leading to his return to prison in February. Shockingly, he was released again on Wednesday.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed his disagreement with Brand’s parole release, highlighting the parole violation and the recurrence of similar crimes. The tragic consequences of this case underscore the importance of evaluating and addressing parole decisions to prevent dangerous individuals from causing further harm to society.

Foxx agreed, saying, “The victim had an order of protection against him from previous encounters, and this history paints a disturbing pattern of behavior which emphasizes the importance of the filing of the charges today.”

A support fund created for the family on Cheddar Up highlighted Jayden’s joyful personality and his interests in spending time with friends, playing sports, and performing. Described as having an infectious laugh and a kind heart, Jayden left a positive impact on everyone he encountered.

He had a strong passion for theater and was actively involved in school productions, including taking on lead roles such as in “Finding Nemo” at his school. Those who knew Jayden would cherish his warm presence because he was always willing to help others.

The fundraiser also mentioned Jayden’s mother, who was deeply valued as a member of an elementary school community for many years before transitioning to a career in the medical field.
